The Chinese Zodiac (生肖, shēngxiào) is an ancient system that weaves together astronomy, folklore, and philosophy into a 12-year cycle of animal signs. For thousands of years, people have looked to these symbols not only as a way of keeping time but also as a guide to personality, destiny, and fortune. The order of the animals comes from the legendary Great Race, where the Jade Emperor invited creatures across the land to compete in a cosmic contest.
